The seven lawyer firm is staffed with highly skilled and knowledgeable legal assistants and paralegals with more than 100 years of combined experience.
Effective January 1, 2006, the law firm by way of merger, became known as Neuberger, Wakeman, Lorenz, Griggs & Sweet. John Neupert, of Lake Mills, and Gus Harms, of Waterloo, maintain an of-counsel relationship with the firm.
The Watertown office dates back to 1938 when George E. Niemann established a law firm at the corner of First and Main Streets on the second floor of the Bank of Watertown building. He practiced law for 53 years, until his death in 1991. Paul L. Hibbard was associated with the firm from 1951 until his retirement in 1985. Arnold K. Schumann joined the firm upon his graduation from law school in 1966, and he was a partner until he was appointed to be a Jefferson County Circuit Judge in 1982. Judge Schumann resides in Watertown and, in his retirement, still serves as a reserve judge. The honorable John M. Ullsvik joined the law firm as a partner in 1979 after stepping down as Jefferson County District Attorney, he left the firm in 1991 to become a Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge.
The Lake Mills office can trace its roots back to 1922 when Robert P. Ferry opened a law office on West Lake Street in Lake Mills. He practiced law until his death in 1968. In 1964, John A. Neupert joined the practice, also after serving as Jefferson County District Attorney. Neupert still practices law on a limited basis and serves as President of the Bank of Lake Mills. Thomas O. Wakeman joined the practice in 1974 after his graduation from law school. In 2002 the firm relocated to their current offices in the newly remodeled former home of the Bank of Lake Mills, across from Commons Park in downtown Lake Mills. In addition to his Lake Mills practice, Wakeman also opened an office in Waterloo in 2003. The office is located at 144 West Madison Street, where he shared office space with Attorney Gus Harms, who has practiced law in Waterloo since 1951. Gus Harms still practices in the Waterloo community, and he and John Neupert are of-counsel to Neuberger, Wakeman, Lorenz, Griggs & Sweet.
The recent merger of these two practices and the ‘of Counsel’ relationship with attorney Gus Harms provides the firm with the ability to continue to provide excellent service and representation to the firm’s clients while maintaining the personal service of a local firm committed to its community and the people for whom it serves.
