Adult Caregiver Burnout
Caregivers of the elderly often feel frustrated, guilty or inadequate. This happens in spite of the fact that most caregivers are very glad to have the opportunity to care for a loved one and share the memories that result from the time together.
If you want to enjoy the time together and sustain your strength for the caregiver’s role, a little respite is essential.
Watch for these signs of increased stress:
* Depression
* Irritability
* Exhaustion
* Self-criticism
* Withdrawal from usual activities
* Substance abuse
The good news is that help is available. Adult Day Care can offer such assistance as social activities, meals, fellowship, daily living activities and physical therapy for your loved one. First, check with your local Senior Center, County Social Service Agency, Doctor or Mental Health Center for recommendations on the local Adult Day Care. Get written information in advance from the Center, and be sure you understand the eligibility requirements and cost. Ask to see a calendar of activities, menus and hours of operation to make sure it coincides with your schedule. Then visit the facility.
Our office regularly works with seniors and their families in planning for the future including Powers of Attorney for caregivers. We have contact with local agencies, government offices and private facilities who offer assistance. We can connect you with the people who can help you make these important decisions to keep your loved one safe and the caregiver supported in that important role. Often, it takes only a brief office visit to put clients in touch with the right support and make sure the caregiver has the assistance necessary to do the job.
