What to Expect When Working with Your Watertown Lawyer

Each year, about 3 million people are hurt in car accidents or other accidents that were not their fault and were the result of another party’s negligence or wrongful act.

Whether you were injured in a car accident that was not your fault, hurt at work, or hurt as a result of a defective product, you should consider hiring an attorney to represent your best interest.

At Neuberger, Griggs Sweet & Froehle, LLP,   We Are Here, We Can Help. We are Lake Mills and Watertown  lawyers representing injured accident victims for over 40 years.

Initial Case Evaluation

There is no fee unless you win.  Our lawyers will provide a free case evaluation.

Make sure your first consultation is free. Our lawyers will not charge you anything to schedule and appointment and discuss your case. We will learn more about you, your case, and discuss whether we think you have a strong case. You should use this initial meeting to ask any questions that you may have. Some questions to ask include:

  • How much experience do you have?
  • Have you handled cases similar to mine before? What was the outcome?
  • Who else will be working on my case?
  • How long do you think it will take?
  • What kind of outcome do you expect?

You should feel good about the attorney that you choose to work with at this first meeting. You need to feel comfortable with any attorney you choose.

Fee Structure

The fees your lawyer charges and how you pay them depends on the type of case. Personal injury cases, for example, typically operate on a contingency basis. This means that you don’t pay any fees to the attorney unless you win the case. You will enter into a contingency fee agreement. If you win the case, you pay a portion of your settlement in attorney fees.

There also may be advanced costs for medical records, medical exams, expert witnesses, etc. that your lawyer pays for upfront. If you lose the case, you may be responsible for these fees. Before you agree to work with an attorney, be clear about these fees and who pays them.

Communication

Different lawyers have different communication styles. During your initial consultation, you can ask about communication and their preferences. Some may prefer to communicate via email and text messages and will update you often about the status of your case.

Most lawyers have teams that work with them on your case. All team members, such as a paralegal, legal assistant, or other person working with your lawyer may communicate with you. Your lawyer should always be available to discuss your case with you directly. That’s why WE’RE HERE WE CAN HELP.

This is another point to address during the initial meeting consultation you have with your lawyer.

What to Expect from Your Lawyer

When you hire an attorney, you should expect them to keep you informed throughout the process, prepared for any deposition, and prepared on how to handle yourself in court if your case goes to trial.

Information My Lawyer Will Need

In a personal injury case, your lawyer will do a lot of investigation themselves, but the more information you can provide them ahead of time, the easier their job will be.

Some things Your attorney will obtain for your personal injury case include:

  • Prior Medical History
  • Medical records
  • Accident reports
  • Any communication you’ve had with insurance companies
  • Treatment plans
  • Receipts for out-of-pocket expenses
  • Contact information for accident witnesses

If you have this information you should provide this information to your attorney up front, you are making their job easier and helping them build your case. The quicker they can do this, the quicker the process will go for you. Personal injury cases may take months, or even years, to resolve, so you want to do all that you can in order to move the process along.
